چکیده

The notion of epistemic independence naturally arises in the framework of reasoning under uncertainty and belief change. Most prominently, probabilistic conditional independence (between variables) plays a key role in Bayesian nets. Several authors [Delgrande and Pelletier, 1994; Benferhat et al., 1994; Dubois et al., 1994; Fariñas del Cerro and Herzig, 1995] have advocated the interest of qualitative independence notions for nonmonotonic reasoning. Gärdenfors [1990] has investigated the complementary notion of relevance in relation with belief change; continuing in this spirit, Fariñas del Cerro and Herzig [1996] have related independence and belief contraction. In the framework of possibility theory, new forms of independence between variables have been studied by Fonck [1993], and De Campos et al. [1995], who develop possibilistic counterparts of Bayesian nets. The aim of the paper is to provide an exhaustive typology of the forms that independence and relevance can take in the setting of an ordinal approach to uncertainty. Such an approach underlie major belief change and nonmonotonic inference theories. In the paper we focus on epistemic independence between events. A, B, C, . . . stand for events (propositions) belonging to a Boolean algebra of subsets of a set W . (Hence we do not distinguish between logically equivalent formulas.) T andF are propositions denoting the true and false events respectively; :A denotes the negation of proposition A, representing the complement of A in W . Let us assume that our representation framework enables us to distinguish between three cognitive attitudes regarding C: C is an accepted belief, :C is an accepted belief (i.e. C is refuted), neither C nor :C is accepted (i.e. total ignorance about C).

Qualitative Relevance and Independence: A Roadmap

Several qualitative notions of epistemic dependence between propositions are studied. They are closely related to the ordinal notion of conditional possibility. What this paper proposes is a systematic investigation of how the fact of learning a new piece of evidence individually affects previous beliefs. Namely a new piece of information A can either leave a previous belief untouched, or cance...

An Ordinal View of Independence with Application to Plausible Reasoning

An ordinal view of independence is studied in the framework of possibility theory. We investigate three possible definitions of dependence, of increasing strength. One of them is the counterpart to the multiplication law in probability theory, and the two others are based on the notion of conditional possibility. These two have enough expressive power to support the whole possibility theory, an...

Belief Change and Dependence

1 I N T R O D U C T I O N The central question in the theory of belief revision is what is meant by a minimal change of a state of belief. The well-known AGM rationali ty postulates for contraction (AlchourrSn et al. 1985, G£rdenfors 1988) partially answer tha t question: ( K i ) K A is a theory.

Logics of Contingency

We introduce the logic of positive and negative contingency. Together with modal operators of necessity and impossibility they allow to dispense of negation. We study classes of Kripke models where the number of points is restricted, and show that the modalities reduce in the corresponding logics.

Contingency-Based Equilibrium Logic

We investigate an alternative language for equilibrium logic that is based on the concept of positive and negative contingency. Beyond these two concepts our language has the modal operators of necessity and impossibility and the Boolean operators of conjunction and disjunction. Neither negation nor implication are available. Our language is just as expressive as the standard language of equili...
